Who's a journalist
This is a very controversial topic as well. Some think anyone who writes and does it with a passion is a journalist. Others, on the other hand think that is absurd and think journalists have to have a degree in journalism and know what they are talking about and be working as an active journalist. I definitely disagree with the second one and agree with the first one to an extent. I think a journalist can be someone who writes and loves what they do but I wouldn't say that your average joe who tweets about the latest activity he just did was a journalist. Bloggers, well yeah i'd say there are some bloggers who are journalists. For example bloggers such as nieniedialogues, rockstar diaries, color me katie, and others are journalists. They write about things that are going on and they give good ideas to people. Sure some of their posts can be personal and about their family and what not, but hands down they are journalists in my mind. I think a journalist can write in several different forms whether its by tweeting, blogging, or writing in a newspaper. Just like the handout we got in class, all three of those are very accurate ways of journalism. People who believe that journalism is just a profession are fine, and their opinion is their own. But there is no way that journalism is just a profession. I think that journalism can be a passion and a craft.
Loyalty to who?
Journalist have a difficult job for several reasons. One of the main include who they choose to be loyal to and why? Do they stick with the businesses or do they stay true to the citizens? What even is loyalty or truth? How does one define these things. And when they do figure it all out how do they stay true and loyal to either or? It seems that this country has started to find ways to sway the truth. Our country thinks it is ok to do certain things when in reality, its not ok. During class and the debate that we had it opened my eyes for both sides which made the question even more tough. yes, it's true that the businesses do matter and that the journalist wouldn't want to lose them and the time and money they put in. But then look at the citizens and the society. They are the people who read what the journalist have to say. They are the people who pick up the newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc. In my personal opinion I think that journalists should be true to first the citizens but that they should also keep the businesses in mind. However if it came down to the two, and if they had to break their loyalty to one of the above.. I would say break it with the businesses. The citizens will always be loyal if the are treated the good.
